O PREDSTAVI / ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Dia Diasso Diasspora by Maša Kagao Knez is a unique mixture of African culture and the expression of modern music and dance. The piece stems from personal stories and experience of its international cast of collaborative authors of whom all are in their own way linked to Africa and source their work from African culture.
The word Dia means prosperity in Malinke, one of the languages of West Africa, Diasso means a good home (the word is also the surname of the choreographer’s father), whilst the word Diasspora speaks about the state of constant dichotomy between the homelands of the two parents and about the many faces of being different or the experience of (not) belonging.
With this striking piece of dance and music its authors have overcome the boundaries of countries and even continents and brought originality, spontaneity and openness onto the Slovenian cultural scene.
The opening night of Dia Diasso Diasspora was also the main event of the international festival of African culture Baofest 2013 organized by KUD Baobab.

..Pokrajina enakovrednega prepleta plesne in glasbene kulture se začne v poltemi ob liričnem spevu študiranega vokala mezzosopranistke, mednarodne operne in koncertne pevke Irene Yebuah Tiran.

Intelligent Slovenian African. Or vice versa. Maša Kagao Knez is excellent
The latest show Dia, Diasso, Diasspora gets a raving
On the stage of Linhart Hall of Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana a performance, conceived and choreographed by Maša Kagao Knez and with an international cast was staged. The piece entitled Dia Diasso Diasspora combines dance, music and personal testimonies and reaches the very top class of these kinds of shows not only in the Slovenian cultural landscape but also in Europe.
Maša Kagao Knez’s hour long project Dia Diasso Diasspora cleverly widens the performing space, fills it with fresh movement and musical diversity. It uses not only cultural but also those genuinely human individual’s virtues and artistic virtues which in its compositional unity are seen, felt and heard as an orchestral concert of dance, harmonious voices and life destinies. This allows every individual to shine through their solo confession, merge with the harmony of congruous choreographic composition and impress their own mark of the era.

Dance show exceeds being torn between two countries on the African and European continent
Dia Diasso Diasspora by Maša Kagao Knez and her widely divergent assistant choreographer Rosana Hribar is a complexly and intelligently construed piece, distinguished for its excellent and in some cases even astonishing performance of dance and music.

A fresh take on two ancient cultures: African and Western
The latest dance piece Dia Diasso Diasspora created by dancer and choreographer Maša Kagao Knez and the creative team is an attempt to bring together two different worlds: African and Slovenian or Western on the stage of Cankarjev dom. Some will find them irreconcilable, many will think that merging these two worlds should not be a problem this day and age, but the point of the show is not to tackle the prejudices.
It is about coexistence of two identities in a single person, two identities that support each other, intertwine and constantly question each other but are not in disagreement.
A men’s dinner jacket and an Afro, African dance rhythms and high heels, an educated soprano voice singing a folk song, playful leisure and the need for order – all of this creates a genuine and sincere atmosphere, often humorous, but most of all packed with an explosion of rhythm. This explosion sometimes come from a drum, sometimes it feels like it is distorting the body, sometimes it is veiled and complemented in a song which awakens the desire even if it is sung in a completely foreign language.
